Purple Heart

Purple Heart (Oakland, Calif.) is the first Black-owned medical cannabis dispensary in Oakland, and the first Black-owned medical storefront in the country. The store opened in 2006 by founder Keith Stephensen, and has received high praise ever since.

As Oakland’s longest operating medical dispensary, Purple Heart has remained committed to serving the cannabis community since 2006. Our mission is to assist every person on an individual basis by providing each client with essential knowledge of cannabis strains and distinctive forms of cannabis that are consistent with their respective needs. We do our utmost to ensure all clients leave with a personable, memorable, and educational experience. As we approach 12 years of operation, we continue to offer our clients some of the lowest prices in the entire Bay Area while ensuring our products meet or exceed California testing standards.

Our goal is to ensure every client receives the assistance they need from friendly, educated budtenders—some of our most seasoned staff were professors at Oaksterdam University prior to joining Purple Heart, and many have over 20 years cannabis industry experience. Our client focus and standing in the community has resulted in Purple Heart being featured in the “The Los Angeles Times,” “The Wall Street Journal,” “Newsweek,” and on Home Box Office.

Featuring a beautiful backdrop of the Oakland/Alameda Estuary, we are located in Oakland’s historic Jack London Square district. Our location is easily accessible by public transportation.
